SUMMARY:HW/IMAGENATION Outdoor Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The HARLEM WEEK/IMAGENATION  Outdoor Film Festival features a FREE Outdoor Film Screening Under the Stars on the Great Lawn of St Nicholas Park. Bring your Blankets\, Snacks and the family and conclude Summer In The City with an evening at the movies. \n\n\n\nWind down Summer In The City with a roller-skating dance party featuring surprise celebrity guest DJs\, followed by a screening of THE ROOFTOP\, a documentary honoring Harlem’s legendary rooftop skating rink — a sacred space of hip-hop origins and Black joy. \n\n\n\nFEATURED FILM:  THE ROOFTOP \n\n\n\nAbout the Film: \n\n\n\nTHE ROOFTOP was a legendary roller skating rink in Harlem from 1979-1989. This is where street life\, music and fashion collided and introduced themselves to the world. The Rooftop provided a place where future music executives\, fashion icons\, legendary recording artists and producers and gangsters cooked up a gumbo of what would be later known as hip-hop culture. From LL Cool J to Rich Porter\, Teddy Riley to DJ Hollywood\, The Rooftop was a unique space for the youth of Harlem and beyond. Part one of this three-part documentary takes you on a journey on what and who ruled the ’80s in Harlem and how that one spot in 155th and 8th Avenue made a world and gave that world to the world. With appearances by “The World Famous” Brucie B\, Teddy Riley\, Gusto Wells\, Alpo Martinez\, Michael “Mike Boogie” Hollingsworth\, The Gucci Girls\, Kevin Chiles\, Reika Carter and more…The Rooftop is where that swag in hip-hop all starts

SUMMARY:HARLEM WEEK/IMAGENATION FILM FESTIVAL Special Screening & Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Film: WHEN A WITNESS RECANTS (NYC Premier) \nThis free\, HARLEM WEEK premiere screening of When a Witness Recants\, the acclaimed new documentary by filmmaker Dawn Porter\, will feature a post screening  panel discussion with invited guest panelists. Together\, they will explore themes of justice\, wrongful conviction\, and the power of storytelling to  advance social change. \n  \n\nIn 1983\, author Ta-Nehisi Coates learned that a 14-year-old boy was murdered in his Baltimore middle school. Upon revisiting the case\, he uncovers the truth: Three innocent teenagers were wrongfully convicted and spent 36 years in prison — creating a lasting impact on the accused\, the witnesses\, and their community. \nDocumentarian Dawn Porter collaborates with author Ta-Nehisi Coates to examine the case surrounding the first student murdered inside a Baltimore public school. Three innocent men from Coates’ community were incarcerated for 36 years on the false testimony of children coerced to take the stand. \nHow could something like this happen? \nPorter illuminates the complete journey: how carefree Black boys playing in the streets of 1980s Baltimore were framed by the media and the justice system; how they grew up behind bars as the world whizzed by; how they were eventually exonerated; and how the community they re-entered grapples with the lingering damage of false narratives. \nWhen A Witness Recants is ultimately about the deep power of narrative: how it can extinguish lives — and how it can potentially resurrect them. — SF
